Who, Me?: The Mysterious DeuxMoi

Even though most of her information comes from anonymous tippers on Instagram, DeuxMoi sometimes seems to post about things she has seen with her own eyes. This proximity to celebrities makes her seem like no ordinary woman. But while bumping elbows with the big guns might not seem like something the average person does, it could definitely describe a typical weekend for someone already born into high society… like the granddaughter of a famous socialite.

At the height of her fame, Nan Kempner was partying with celebrity designers like Yves Saint Laurent. If her granddaughter, Meggie Kempner, is DeuxMoi, wouldn’t mingling with celebrities this way be extremely convenient?

• To begin with, an Instagram post made by model Kristina Romanova in July 2013 tagged two accounts. These were @deuxmoi and @mkempsyo — Meggie Kempner’s old account. From 2013 onwards, @mkempsyo constantly pops up where DeuxMoi is mentioned… and both accounts have featured Pinterest pinboards dedicated to Nan Kempner.
• In 2014, the Kempners launched a new clothing line inspired by their late grandmother. A comment under a Facebook post about it read, “so proud of the deuxmoi gals girl Meggie Kempner”.
• And finally, in DeuxMoi’s book Anon Pls, a fictional narrative that closely follows DeuxMoi’s path to fame, the protagonist works in fashion. And who would know more about the fashion world than a fashion entrepreneur?

Beyond that, however, the trail goes cold. Besides, DeuxMoi has denied the claim, saying in an interview with Vanity Fair that Meggie Kempner is “not associated with the account at this time”. But does that mean that Kempner never worked with DeuxMoi… or that she just doesn’t work with her now?

We will never know for sure.

In May 2022, freelance journalist Brian Feldman — who had previously written articles for publications including the New York Times — published a long article on his Substack account. The piece was titled “deuxmoi’s digital trail”… and it promised to expose DeuxMoi’s identity once and for all.

Feldman’s research was meticulous and thorough, digging through nine years’ worth of data. He checked Instagram accounts. He uncovered old Facebook posts.

The person he identified as the woman behind DeuxMoi? Model Melissa Lovallo.

• Feldman found that username @mlovallo12 constantly appeared in Instagram posts that tagged DeuxMoi as well. In addition, a post from the same username on Bellazon, a model-tracking forum, showed Lovallo wearing a DeuxMoi shirt. The photo was captioned, “everyone should follow @deuxmoi”.
• In December 2020, Hailey Bieber posted on Instagram that she knew who DeuxMoi was, claiming that she had worked with her before. Since Bieber is a model, it’s likely that DeuxMoi is a model too… just like Lovallo. And, when entertainment site PopCrave announced Feldman’s findings, Bieber liked the post, signalling her agreement.
• To top it all off, other celebrities certainly agree that Lovallo is DeuxMoi. When the account posted wrongly about Taylor Swift’s new ring being a gift from her current partner Travis Kelce, actor Keleigh Teller corrected her on social media, saying pointedly, “Melissa at deux moi, here ya go”.

So is Melissa Lovallo really DeuxMoi? It is certainly possible. But as with Meggie Kempner, DeuxMoi vehemently denied that Lovallo was associated with the account, even announcing that she would block anyone who “amplif[ied] the nonsense that was posted” on Feldman’s site.

For now, the theory remains unconfirmed.

In December 2022, loyal DeuxMoi followers were shocked when the account posted a strange screenshot on Instagram Stories — one that referred to an incredibly well-known singer as DeuxMoi’s “boss”. This artist was none other than “Señorita” singer Shawn Mendes.

Could Shawn Mendes really have bought over DeuxMoi’s account? And if so, is the singer himself pulling the strings behind the scenes, choosing the tips that get posted?

• Most of the tips posted about Shawn Mendes are harmless, such as sightings of him at restaurants. This is extremely convenient, given that many of DeuxMoi’s posts about other celebrities are scandalous, or otherwise damaging to their reputations.
• More than one person writing in to DeuxMoi has referred to Shawn Mendes as DeuxMoi’s boss.
• And DeuxMoi has said as much herself.

As hilarious as this theory is, however, it currently seems to be an inside joke between DeuxMoi and her followers. But who knows? Maybe DeuxMoi is just pretending that it is a joke to hide the fact that she’s doing PR for one of the most popular singers today.
